Mama Z was painting her front porch when Gertrude arrived with Damon. âHello, great-granddaughter,â she said.
âMama Z, this is my friend, Damon.â
âVery pleased to make your acquaintance,â Damon said.
Mama Z laughed. âMake your acquaintance? What century are you from, young brother? Iâm happy to meet you too.â
âWhat do I call you?â Damon asked.
âYou call me Mama Z, just like everybody else.â
âDamon writes books,â Gertrude said.
âHe does, does he? Maybe we can find you something to write about.â
âI donât understand,â Damon said.
âWhat do you know about lynching?â Mama Z asked.
âSome. I wrote a book about racial violence.â
âI know,â the old woman said. âI have a copy in the house. Itâs very â¦ââshe searched for the wordââscholastic.â
âI think youâre saying that like itâs a bad thing.â
Mama Z shrugged.
Damon looked at Gertrude, as if for clarification, only to see her shrug as well. âScholastic,â he repeated.
âDonât take it the wrong way,â Gertrude said.
âYour book is very interesting,â Mama Z said, âbecause you were able to construct three hundred and seven pages on such a topic without an ounce of outrage.â
Damon was visibly bothered by this. âOne hopes that dispassionate, scientific work will generate proper outrage.â
âNicely said, nicely said,â Mama Z said. âWouldnât you say that was nicely said, great-granddaughter?â
âI would,â Gertrude agreed.
âThere are a lot of strange things happening in Leflore County, Damon,â Mama Z said. âOther places too. Not only Mississippi. Supernatural things.â
âReally now?â Damon smiled at Gertrude.
Gertrude nodded.
âDo you like the color?â Mama Z asked. She stepped away from the railing of her porch.
âItâs black,â Damon said.
âI know what color it is,â the old woman said. âI asked you if you like it.â
âIt will be difficult to see in the dark,â Damon said.
âThatâs very true, my boy, very true. I want you to remember that.â
âWhat are you talking about?â he asked.
âGertrude, take Damon inside to the library and show him the records.â
âCome on,â Gertrude said. âThereâs something inside that you have to see. Do you want some tea?â
âNo tea. I just want to catch up here and understand. Supernatural? Whatâs supernatural? What kind of bullshit is that? What are the records? Why is she acting so creepy? Who paints a porch black?â Damon followed Gertrude through the front room. He looked at the shelves. âShe has a lot of books.â
Gertrude led him into the library and gestured for him to regard the array of filing cabinets.
âWhat am I looking at?â Damon asked.
âThese are the records,â she said. âThere is a file here for nearly every person lynched in this country since 1913.â
Damon was gobsmacked. He looked from wall to wall. âThat old woman compiled all of this?â He stepped forward and ran a hand along a cabinet.
âOpen it. Read.â
âWhy 1913?â
âMama Z was born in 1913. Shortly after her birth her father was lynched. He was a voting rights activist. His is the first dossier.â
âHow many are there?â Damon asked.
âI donât know.â
âHow did she do all of this?â
âSheâs not like the rest of us,â Gertrude said.
